Increase in marriage licence...is it a disincentive to marry or an incentive to get counceling?

This is a short but sweet article. I have heard of states lowering marriage licenses to get people to marry but this article says just the opposite. It is planned that the increased fees will pay for counseling for couples who wish to get a divorce. Is this really fair? Does this provide a disincentive or an incentive?

  1. I like the idea, but I favor anything that supports marriage. People typically spend thousands on dollars on marriage I don't think $100 will put anyone out too much. I also like how you can get a discount if you get premarital counseling.

  2. I am a big fan of premarital education. I had a long career as a therapist before becoming a professor. I see the value of preparing for and getting counseling during marriage. It sure seems to be a tough sell, though. People will marry regardless of the fee they have to pay, if they want to be married. It would be interesting to have a bellweather state in this area.
