I know that I have posted some articles related to the United Kingdom on this blog, but I think it is important to look at what other countries have and are doing legislatively. As Dr. Piercy has us read articles in class about other countries, I think it is interesting to look at other countries policies and hypothesize about what would or could happen if similar policy were to go into affect here in the U.S.
As I stated in my introduction to this blog, I wish to take both sides of the argument for the two parent family. Therefore, this article is in regards to legislation that was being passed last year in the UK and its negative impacts on single mothers. My question to you is what do you think of this type of legislation? Is this fair? What would be the alternative? Would this work in the U.S.?

I confess it was a bit hard to take the article at face value because it came from the socialist party. :) I know that shouldn't make a difference, but I couldn't help but shake my head at the notion that daycare for children should be free and available to all. I can see it now...parents dropping their children off at 6 AM and picking them up at 9 PM, whether they go to work or not!
ReplyDeleteWow! Uummm... I understand the need for childcare, and the extra support for single parents. I also realize that nothing is "free" and so on one hand it makes sense to require something from the parents. But it goes agains my (individualistic) grain to agree with a governments right to mandate how many hours to work per week etc... And the article brings up a good point about education. Educated people make more money but working and going to school is tricky, and just taking night classes to get a degree is not always a feasible option!
